Kemwell FPL Fireplace Lining Calcium Silicate Board

A1 Non-combustible high Performance, dimensionally stable, fire resistant building board for stove wall and fireplace linings

Kemwell FPL fireplace lining calcium silicate board is a safe, robust and lightweight chimney breast lining system for cassette and inset fireplaces and stoves.

Kemwell FPL calcium silicate boards can resist continuous high temperatures up to 1000°C and are dimensionally stable during and after heating. This reduces the risk of cracking which would negate the fire-resisting properties of other boards. Their high thermal storage capacity also ensures that heat is evenly distributed within a room.

The system includes various components, including boards, calcium silicate studs and glue.

Compliance to HETAS standards is vital to ensure householder safety, meaning all components of a fireplace lining system should be compatible and fire safe.

Kemwell FPL calcium silicate board system is A1 non-combustible, the highest level of fire performance.

Kemwell FPL is designed specifically to comply with Building Regulations Part J (Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage Systems), providing homeowners, architects, developers, and contractors with adaptability and performance benefits to enable safe and innovative designs in the home.

You can specify Kemwell FPL with confidence.

Installation Guidelines

Kemwell FPL should be fixed at maximum 300mm centres to a non-combustible background either steel stud framework, blockwork or brick. Boards should be pre-drilled with oversize holes to allow for a degree of thermal expansion.

Kemwell FPL can be fixed to studs of 20mm thick x 68mm wide as a dimensionally stable alternative. When fixing directly to blockwork or brick, metal plugs should be used.

Building Regulations requirements

The published Approved Document J – Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage systems in the Building Regulations, provides requirements for the installation of heating appliances in buildings.

According to this document, Requirement J2 states that “Combustion appliances and flue pipes shall be so installed, and fireplaces and chimneys be so constructed and installed, as to reduce to a reasonable level the risk of people suffering burns or the building catching fire in consequence of their use.”

Within this document, minimum distances are prescribed, and the use of non-combustible lining materials is indicated, and this guidance given must be followed at all times. Particular care should be taken to ensure that hot radiating surfaces are kept clear of combustible materials such as timber.

It should be noted that while the Kemwell FPL system is made up of A1 non-combustible boards and components, the minimum distances from combustible material specified in Approved Document J should be maintained.

Always follow the instructions of the appliance manufacturer in relation to the installation of same.

FEATURES

Fire Resistance

Kemwell FPL boards can resist continuous high temperatures of up to 1000°C.

Kemwell FPL is designed specifically to comply with Building Regulations Part J (Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage Systems).

Moisture Resistant

Boards will not deteriorate when used in damp or humid conditions and will not encourage mould growth.

The boards are also rot proof. Performance characteristics are not degraded by age or moisture.

Vermin Resistant

Boards remain unaffected by rodent, termite and insect attack.

Insulation

Boards have a high Insulation performance and will resist continuous high temperatures of up to 1000°C. Thermal conductivity is 0.20W/mK (approx.) at 20°C. This reduces heat loss and allows emitted heat to be distributed evenly within the room.

Easy Workability

Quick and easy to install and can be cut with traditional woodworking equipment and installed using standard fixings and Kemwell approved glue.

Chemical Stability

Kemwell FPL is a chemically inert calcium silicate board, unaffected by contact with most chemicals and resistant to dilute acids and alkalis. Boards do not contain any bonding agents, which could emit irritating odours or affect the adhesion to the board in a negative way.

Smooth Surface

Kemwell FPL has a smooth finish. If plastering or wallpapering is required, the board should be fully sealed using an inorganic primer suitable for use at elevated temperatures.

Durability

Kemwell FPL boards are made of calcium silicate and cement, providing very strong walls.

Due to minimal expansion and contraction during and after heating, the risks of cracks, microscopic fissures or deformation is greatly reduced.
