Why you should use Kemwell FPL for Fireplace linings

Why you should use Kemwell FPL for Fireplace linings

As everybody knows, fire can be deadly and destroy lives or will damage buildings and the environment. Reducing the risk of fire is vital in the daily actions and decisions we make in our lives.

However, sometimes we rely on standards and regulations and the subsequent understanding of these by the specifiers and installers of appropriate products to ensure our everyday safety. This is particularly the case when chimney breast lining or wall lining systems for cassette and inset fireplaces and stoves in the home are being installed or refurbished.

The published Approved Document J – Combustion appliances and Fuel Storage systems in the Building Regulations provides requirements for the installation of heating appliances in buildings. Requirement J2 states that:

“Combustion appliances and flue pipes shall be so installed, and fireplaces and chimneys be so constructed and installed, as to reduce to a reasonable level the risk of people suffering burns or the building catching fire in consequence of their use.”

Within this document, minimum distances are prescribed, and the use of non-combustible lining materials is indicated, and this guidance given must be followed at all times. Particular care should be taken to ensure that hot radiating surfaces are kept clear of combustible materials such as timber.

Despite these guidelines, the market is not always fully educated about what is the correct type of board to use for chimney breast and fireplace linings.

Many installers will just assume that standard fire-rated boards are suitable. However, the reality is that they are not fit for purpose as the sustained intensity of heat, coupled with subsequent cooling after each fire means that unless the board is able to remain dimensionally stable, the board is highly likely to crack.

If the board does crack, it will not only negate the fire resisting characteristics of the board, but it will also need replacing with a fit for purpose board which will cost the householder even more money.

A cracked board as well as making the room in need of redecoration, more importantly, could cause the building to catch fire and put lives at risk. Kemwell FPL Calcium Silicate board overcomes this problem from the outset.

Kemwell FPL Fireplace Lining Calcium Silicate Board is a safe, reliable and robust chimney breast lining system, specifically designed for stoves and cassette and inset fireplaces. The system can resist continuous high temperatures up to 1000°C and the board will remain dimensionally stable and fit for purpose during and after heating.

To ensure householder safety, compliance with the required HETAS standards is vital, both in terms of product selection and correct installation. Therefore, ALL the components of a fireplace lining system need to be compatible and fire safe. The Kemwell FPL calcium silicate board system is A1 non-combustible, the highest level of fire performance.

We understand the complex and stringent requirements of the building and construction industry and our products provide homeowners, architects, developers, and contractors with adaptability and performance benefits to enable safe and innovative designs to be easily realised.

FEATURES

Fire Resistance
Kemwell FPL boards can resist continuous high temperatures of up to 1000°C. Kemwell FPL is designed specifically to comply with Building Regulations Part J (Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage Systems).

Moisture Resistant
Boards will not deteriorate when used in damp or humid conditions and will not encourage mould growth. The boards are also rot proof. Performance characteristics are not degraded by age or moisture.

Vermin Resistant
Boards remain unaffected by rodent, termite and insect attack.

Thermal Characteristics
FPL boards thermal conductivity is 0.20W/mK (approx.) at 20°C. This reduces heat loss and allows emitted heat to be distributed evenly within the room.

Easy Workability
Boards are quick and easy to install and can be cut with traditional woodworking equipment and installed using standard fixings and Kemwell approved glue.

Smooth Surface
If plastering or wallpapering is required, the board should be fully sealed using an inorganic primer suitable for use at elevated temperatures. Kemwell FPL can be decorated using silicate based paints, prior to painting the boards should be sealed using an inorganic primer.

Durability
Kemwell FPL boards are made of calcium silicate and cement, providing very strong walls. Due to minimal expansion and contraction during and after heating, the risks of cracks, microscopic fissures or deformation is greatly reduced.

Chemical Stability
Kemwell FPL is a chemically inert calcium silicate board, unaffected by contact with most chemicals and resistant to dilute acids and alkalis. Boards do not contain any bonding agents, which could emit irritating odours or affect the adhesion to the board in a negative way

Kemwell Fire and Woodwarm Stoves partner at Hearth & Home Expo 2019

We are delighted to be working alongside the high-quality stove manufacturer, Woodwarm Stoves at this year’s Hearth & Home show in Harrogate between 9-11th June 2019.

Woodwarm Stoves has both quality and safety at the centre of their operational ethos. This is one of the reasons why they endorse and use Kemwell FPL Fireplace Lining Calcium Silicate Board as part of their stove installations when a new or replacement wall lining is required.

On the Woodwarm Stoves stand (B10) you will be able to see one of their stoves with Kemwell FPL used to help make the installation look beautiful as well as being safe, long-lasting and HETAS compliant.

They will also be showing their exciting new Ecodesign Ready Phoenix Range, from 4kW to 8kW.This contemporary range of stoves exceed the minimum requirements for 2022 and are all approved for smoke-controlled areas. These stunning stoves are individually built by craftsmen in the heart of Devon and retain all the fantastic features of the original Phoenix Range including stay cool handles, ease of lighting and amazing controllability aided by the extremely controllable secondary and tertiary air systems.

Included in the range and on show at Harrogate is the easy fit Phoenix Eco Firebright 5kW Inset stove and the new sleeker designed Phoenix Eco Firebug – now 8kW.

Also, at Hearth & Home this year is their thermostatically, fan assisted Gas Fired Phoenix Stoves, available in 3, 5 and 7kW. Fully remote controlled, electronic ignition and stunning real flame effect fire. Conventional and balance flue options available. Come and see these beautiful and realistic flame effect gas stoves.

An open fire has historically been associated with a warm chimney and, on testing, it can often be shown that 90% of the heat from the fire can be lost to the chimney and the outside air. Woodwarm stoves are safe, single self-contained units which eliminate the waste and put the heat back to the room where it belongs.

All Woodwarm stoves feature an excellent air wash system. After circulating the stove, preheated air flushes down over the double glazed door keeping the glass perfectly clean at all times, even at low temperatures. Superior clean burn efficiency means that not only is more heat achieved on less fuel, but combustion products in the flue are also reduced, causing fewer flue problems. Reduction in pollution combined with more efficiency creates a really environmentally friendly device.

We are also at the exhibition and visitors will be able to discuss the new Kemwell FPL Fireplace Lining Calcium Silicate Board System on stand C31.

An electric reaction to Kemwell’s KemSafe Cable Enclosure System at the UK Infrastructure Show, NEC

An electric reaction to Kemwell’s KemSafe Cable Enclosure System at the UK Infrastructure Show, NEC

Kemwell Fire’s solution for High Voltage cable protectionthe KemSafe CES Cable Enclosure System – created a high voltage reaction of its own when it was showcased at the UK Infrastructure Show on 17th April.

The installation display created an electric reaction amongst the contractors and specifiers visiting the show and clearly demonstrated the simplicity and effectiveness of the Kemwell prefabricated fire protection cable enclosure system, which is supplied in bespoke sections, ready for onsite installation.

The UK Infrastructure Show

Infrastructure is the foundation upon which our economy is built. The Government remains determined to deliver better infrastructure across the UK to help grow the economy and improve opportunities. With a newly released national infrastructure pipeline of over £600 billion in projects to be completed over the next 10 years, the infrastructure industry represents a significant opportunity for businesses of all sizes.

The UK Infrastructure Show 2018 provided participants with a unique opportunity to engage, connect and collaborate with a vast array of key projects, decision-makers and influencers focusing on key areas of major, sustained investment – Transport, Energy and Housing.

Eddie Lunham, Business Development Director of Kemwell Fire International commented: ‘The feedback received at the show on the suitability of the KemSafe Cable Enclosure System to provide optimum safety and peace of mind for protecting escape routes from potentially fatal high voltage cable fires, demonstrated the important role Kemwell has in helping to improve the UK’s infrastructure.”

Kemwell KemSafe cable enclosure systems (CES)

KemSafe cable enclosure systems (CES) are specifically designed and manufactured to provide optimum fire protection and thermal insulation performance at high temperatures.

KemSafe CES is a proven solution for the protection of medium and high voltage cables in the building and construction industry, and a tested solution to the requirements of BS 8519:2010.

Electrical cables which may pose a significant risk in fire scenarios are installed in many areas of a building, including corridors, and also often distributed to adjoining rooms and compartments.

Corridors are used as escape routes during a fire; therefore, cable installations are of particular concern to those responsible for the safety of the building and its occupants, especially with electrical short circuits being a major cause of a fire, and the risk of smoke and toxic gases accumulating in access and escape route.

KemSafe CES inhibit the spread of fire and heat when ignited inside the duct, containing it and stopping it entering other compartments (e.g. corridor escape routes) for enough time to allow safe evacuation or for the emergency services to enter.
